From Bean to Brew: EarthRoast Coffee's Sustainable Revolution
The term "sustainability" is often thrown around, but what does it truly mean? According to the Oxford Dictionary, sustainability refers to "the ability to be maintained at a certain rate or level" or "avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance." While definitions are helpful, the word has become somewhat of a buzzword. So, what does it mean in our world today?
In simple terms, sustainability is a social goal centered around ensuring the long-term coexistence of humanity on Earth. It's about safeguarding a good life for our children and grandchildren. By viewing it through this lens, we can begin to understand the multifaceted nature of sustainability. According to experts, it encompasses three pillars: environmental, social, and economic, although many publications emphasize the environmental pillar as the most crucial.
In everyday usage, sustainability primarily revolves around addressing significant environmental issues. At EarthRoast Coffee, we recognize the environmental impact of coffee, which contributes a staggering 209 billion pounds of carbon to the atmosphere annually. Moreover, coffee cultivation has led to the deforestation of 2.3 million hectares between 2001 and 2015. Such practices are simply unsustainable, and we must consider how future generations will enjoy both coffee and life if we fail to live sustainably today.
To combat these alarming trends, we decided to tackle the issue at its source—the coffee-growing regions. We are committed to sourcing our coffee exclusively from farmers who prioritize organic and natural farming methods. This approach ensures the protection of soil, water, and wildlife by avoiding the use of pesticides and herbicides. Not only is this beneficial for the environment, but it also guarantees the highest quality coffee for our customers. Our coffees are single origin, meaning they come from a specific region, allowing us to confirm that they meet our expectations.
Furthermore, we have taken additional measures to support sustainability. For every bag of coffee or product sold through our store, we pledge to plant a tree, aiming to reverse the trend of shrinking forests. Additionally, we cover the cost of offsetting the carbon footprint of each order. Both initiatives contribute to preserving a breath of fresh air for future generations, enabling our kids and grandkids to continue enjoying coffee.
Our approach to sourcing coffee not only addresses the environmental pillar of sustainability but also aligns with its economic and social aspects. By working directly with smaller farmers, we eliminate intermediaries and empower them to create a sustainable livelihood that can be passed down to future generations. After all, who better understands sustainable farming practices than the farmers themselves?
